You Are Not Trapped ~ Tips for Eating Out
Changing your lifestyle and the way you eat is not about never going out, never enjoying a meal with others and feeling trapped in your own house, with your “safe” food. Instead, with a Metabolic Balance® plan, understand the principles of how to eat making the best choices.
#1 Assess how they make their food: Whole Foods vs Pre-Packaged
Learn to identify the quality of the food that comes out at a restaurant. Some places make all their food in house while others come prepackaged. While we know fresh over frozen is best, frozen over canned is next best. You can use this principle to assess how your food may have been prepared and how it came out to you. Bigger chains usually have more pre-packaged foods because they need their food to be the same at each restaurant.
#2 Sauces & Condiment
Oftentimes sauces and condiments are loaded with additives and sugars. Try choosing olive oil for a dressing or just balsamic vinegar. Mustard is also a great choice if you are missing that ketchup feeling. Mustard though comes from a natural spice and can often be mixed with just some vinegar, and turmeric. If a sauce is included with your meal, understand that there is more sugar and you may have either some cravings or hunger sooner rather than later. If you have things like sauce, be sure your meal is paired with a lot of water.
#3 Quality over Convenient
When you make the choice to eat out, make the choice of quality food over “fast” & “convenient” food that often comes fried and has lower quality nutrients. As you think about the foods you choose to introduce into your body, think about the quality of foods you are giving yourself. Some “fast foods” restaurants are going toward more whole foods, so just be aware of what you are choosing. It doesn’t have to be an expensive restaurant, you just need to be informed about the choices you make.
So get out, enjoy sharing meals with others while being true to yourself and the work you put into your health and your body. Small changes consistently are going to make a big impact in being able to sustain a lifestyle change.
